To enable Phalaenopsis orchids to thrive, in addition to appropriate management of light, temperature, and water, choosing a suitable cultivation substrate is also of crucial importance. Among numerous substrate materials, peanut shells, due to their unique properties and advantages, have gradually become a popular choice for cultivating Phalaenopsis orchids. So, can Phalaenopsis orchids really use peanut shells as a substrate? And is it necessary to ferment the peanut shells before using them?
Can peanut shells be used as a substrate for Phalaenopsis orchids? The answer is yes. As a common agricultural waste, peanut shells, after appropriate treatment, can serve as an excellent cultivation substrate for Phalaenopsis orchids. Peanut shells are rich in fiber and essential plant nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which are vital for the growth of Phalaenopsis orchids. Meanwhile, the granular structure of peanut shells can increase the looseness of the soil, facilitating the respiration and growth of the roots of Phalaenopsis orchids. Moreover, peanut shells have good air permeability and water retention capacity, which can provide an ideal growth environment for Phalaenopsis orchids.
Is it necessary to ferment peanut shells before using them? Regarding this question, the answer is clear: before using peanut shells as a substrate for Phalaenopsis orchids, they must be fermented. Unfermented peanut shells will undergo a slow fermentation process in the soil, during which substances such as heat and organic acids will be produced. These substances may cause damage to the roots of Phalaenopsis orchids, leading to root rot or poor growth. Therefore, to ensure the healthy growth of Phalaenopsis orchids, it is essential to fully ferment the peanut shells before using them.
The method of fermenting peanut shells is relatively simple. The collected clean and pest-free peanut shells can be soaked in water and then put into a sealed container (such as a plastic bag) for fermentation. During this period, the peanut shells in the container should be turned over regularly to accelerate the fermentation process. When the peanut shells become soft, dark in color, and have a slight ammonia smell, it indicates that the fermentation process is complete. At this time, the peanut shells can be used as a cultivation substrate for Phalaenopsis orchids.
When using the fermented peanut shells as a substrate for Phalaenopsis orchids, they can be used alone or mixed with other substrate materials (such as pine needles, shredded bark, sphagnum moss, perlite, etc.) in a certain proportion. This can not only further improve the air permeability and water retention capacity of the substrate but also provide more comprehensive nutrient support for Phalaenopsis orchids.
During the cultivation process, the following points also need to be noted: First, ensure that the substrate has good drainage to avoid waterlogging causing root rot; second, carry out reasonable management of water and fertilizers according to the growth needs of Phalaenopsis orchids; third, regularly observe the growth status of Phalaenopsis orchids and promptly detect and deal with any possible problems.
Phalaenopsis orchids can indeed use peanut shells as a cultivation substrate, but they must be fully fermented before use. Through reasonable substrate selection and scientific management measures, we can make Phalaenopsis orchids bloom beautifully at home.
