For flower lovers, hydroponically growing Phalaenopsis orchids is undoubtedly a beautiful and challenging way of cultivation. Especially in winter, many flower growers face a problem: Can hydroponic Phalaenopsis orchids be cultivated with cold water in winter? Should cold water or hot water be used?
Phalaenopsis is a tropical plant with relatively high temperature requirements. In winter, the indoor temperature should preferably be maintained between 18°C and 25°C, which is the optimal temperature range for the growth of Phalaenopsis. Once the temperature is too low, the growth of Phalaenopsis will be inhibited, and it may even suffer from frost damage. Therefore, temperature control is of great importance when cultivating Phalaenopsis in winter.
Water quality is the source of life for hydroponic Phalaenopsis orchids. Clear and pollution-free water quality is the basis for the healthy growth of Phalaenopsis. In winter, due to the low temperature, the water quality is prone to becoming turbid, which will affect the growth of Phalaenopsis. Therefore, we need to change the water regularly to keep the water quality clear. Meanwhile, water temperature is also a factor that cannot be ignored.
The Impact of Cold Water
Irrigating Phalaenopsis directly with cold water (especially tap water) in winter may cause frostbite to its roots. Because cold water can stimulate the roots of Phalaenopsis to contract rapidly, resulting in the blockage of stomata, thus affecting the normal respiration and nutrient absorption of the roots. In the long run, it may lead to root rot, thereby affecting the growth of the whole Phalaenopsis plant.
The Applicability of Hot Water
Although hot water can avoid the problem of frostbite, if the water temperature is too high, it will also cause damage to the roots of Phalaenopsis. High-temperature water may stimulate the roots to turn black and rot rapidly. Therefore, whether it is cold water or hot water, direct use may bring risks.
To avoid the above problems, we should choose an appropriate water temperature for hydroponics. In winter, it is best to use warm water for irrigation. The temperature of the warm water should be close to that of the maintenance environment to avoid excessive temperature difference stimulation to the roots. The water can be set out 1 to 2 days in advance to allow the water temperature to gradually balance with the indoor temperature, and such water is more suitable for hydroponically cultivating Phalaenopsis.
In addition to water temperature, the following points should also be noted when hydroponically cultivating Phalaenopsis:
Adequate Nutrients: Although Phalaenopsis grows slowly in winter, it still requires an appropriate amount of nutrients. Special hydroponic nutrient solution can be added regularly to provide the necessary nutrients for Phalaenopsis.
Moderate Light: Phalaenopsis likes diffused light. Since the sunlight is weak in winter, Phalaenopsis can be placed in a bright place to receive an appropriate amount of light, but avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burns.
Proper Moisturization: The air is dry in winter, which can easily cause the leaves of Phalaenopsis to lose water. Therefore, it is necessary to spray an appropriate amount of water mist on the leaves of Phalaenopsis and the surrounding environment regularly to increase the air humidity.
Regular Water Change: Although it is not necessary to change the water too frequently, it is necessary to change the water at least once a week to keep the water quality clear and the nutrients sufficient.
Avoid Excessive Water Level: When hydroponically cultivating Phalaenopsis, the water level should not be too high, preferably not exceeding one-third of the roots. An excessively high water level will prevent the roots from breathing and lead to root rot.
In winter, hydroponic Phalaenopsis orchids cannot be directly cultivated with cold water. Instead, an appropriate water temperature should be selected for irrigation. Meanwhile, other cultivation details should also be noted to ensure the healthy growth of Phalaenopsis in winter.
