For many flower lovers, phalaenopsis is undoubtedly a beautiful and popular flower. However, whether phalaenopsis needs to be soaked in water and how to soak it for maintenance often puzzle many flower growers.
Whether phalaenopsis needs to be soaked in water mainly depends on its growth stage and maintenance needs. Under normal circumstances, phalaenopsis does not need to be soaked in water frequently. However, under specific circumstances, such as in the process of changing from planting medium to hydroponics or when treating the roots of phalaenopsis, soaking in water becomes a necessary step. It should be noted that the soaking time and method must be strictly controlled to avoid damaging the phalaenopsis.
Soaking Methods for Phalaenopsis
Preparation Stage
Root Pruning: First, the roots of phalaenopsis need to be pruned to remove rotten and empty roots to ensure the health of the roots.
Root Cleaning: After pruning, wash the roots thoroughly with clean water to remove the remaining planting medium and soil.
Semi-Hydroponic Stage
Initial Soaking: Put the cleaned roots of phalaenopsis into clean water, with the water level below the roots, for the initial soaking. The soaking time should not be too long, generally about 3.5 hours, until the roots turn completely green.
Cyclic Soaking: After the initial soaking, take out the phalaenopsis and drain the water to keep the roots dry. Soak it in water again the next day and repeat this process until the fifth day. From the fifth day on, increase the soaking time to 5 hours. After soaking, leave about half a centimeter of water level to keep the upper part of the roots dry.
Observation and Adjustment: During the whole semi-hydroponic stage, the root condition needs to be closely observed. If rotten roots or poor root condition are found, prune and drain the water in time. When the roots are smooth without wounds and preferably with new roots growing, it can enter the full hydroponic stage.
Full Hydroponic Stage
Water Level Control: In the full hydroponic stage, the water level needs to be strictly controlled. After soaking with high-level clean water, pour out most of the water and leave one-third of the water level. Then, maintain it according to the rule of "soaking for three days and draining water for one day" for 2-3 times. Then, maintain it according to the rule of "leaving one-third of the water level and draining water for one day every seven days" for 2-3 times. Finally, control the water for one day every half a month until the phalaenopsis is completely adapted to the hydroponic environment.
Precautions: In the full hydroponic stage, the water quality needs to be kept clean, and tap water containing chlorine or impurities should be avoided. At the same time, regularly check the root condition and promptly prune the rotten and diseased roots.
In addition to soaking for maintenance, the following points should also be noted for the maintenance of phalaenopsis:
Light: Phalaenopsis prefers diffused light and should be kept away from direct sunlight.
Temperature: Maintain a suitable temperature to avoid damage to phalaenopsis caused by too high or too low temperatures.
Humidity: Maintain a high air humidity, which is conducive to the growth and flowering of phalaenopsis.
Fertilization: Appropriate fertilization can provide the nutrients needed by phalaenopsis and promote its growth and flowering.
Phalaenopsis needs to be soaked in water under specific circumstances, but the soaking time and method must be strictly controlled. At the same time, other maintenance details also need to be noted to ensure the healthy growth and beautiful blooming of phalaenopsis.
