To cultivate succulents well and let them thrive, there are four “don'ts” that need to be kept in mind.
Don't water frequently. Most succulent plants are native to arid or semi-arid regions and they have strong water storage capacity. Excessive and frequent watering will cause the soil to be in a wet state for a long time, and the roots cannot breathe normally, which is easy to cause root rot. Succulent plants have relatively little demand for water. According to different seasons and growing environments, the frequency of watering should be reasonably controlled. During the growing season, the watering frequency can be appropriately increased, but also ensure that the soil has enough time to dry between waterings. In periods of slow growth such as winter, watering should be reduced to keep the soil slightly dry.
Don't move them at will. After succulent plants adapt to an environment, their growth state will gradually stabilize. If you move their positions at will, especially when there are great changes in aspects such as light, temperature and humidity, succulent plants may be affected because they cannot adapt to the new environment in time. For example, suddenly moving from a place with sufficient light to a dark place, succulents may become leggy; moving from a warm indoor place to a cold outdoor place may suffer from frost damage. Therefore, unless necessary, try not to change the placement of succulents frequently.
Don't over-fertilize. Some flower lovers apply a large amount of fertilizer in order to make succulents grow quickly, which is not advisable. Succulent plants themselves grow relatively slowly and have limited demand for fertilizer. Excessive fertilization not only cannot promote growth, but will cause fertilizer damage and damage the root system. When fertilizing, choose special fertilizers suitable for succulents and dilute and use them according to the instructions. Generally speaking, applying a thin fertilizer once every one or two months during the growing season can meet their growth needs.
Don't prune randomly. Succulent plants have different shapes. Some flower lovers randomly prune the leaves and branches of succulents in pursuit of the so-called “perfect shape”. But doing this can easily lead to wound infection and affect the health of succulents. Unless succulents have pests and diseases or obvious problems such as leggy growth and aging, do not easily carry out large-scale pruning. If pruning is really necessary, use sterilized tools and pay attention to keeping the wound dry after pruning to avoid infection.
To cultivate succulent plants well, we need to follow their growth laws and keep in mind the four “don'ts” principles. Give them appropriate light, water, fertilizer and a stable environment.
