Phalaenopsis, with its elegant flower posture and long flowering period, is loved by flower enthusiasts. The maintenance of phalaenopsis, especially the management after repotting, is crucial for its successful blooming.
The blooming time of phalaenopsis after repotting is not fixed. It is affected by various factors, such as the health condition of the plant, the time of repotting, and the maintenance environment. Generally speaking, if a phalaenopsis is repotted during the medium-sized seedling stage and is well maintained, it will take approximately 6 months to 1 year to bloom again. This is because repotting is a relatively stressful event for the plant. It needs some time to adapt to the new growth environment, restore the root function, and then accumulate nutrients for blooming.
It is worth noting that the flowering period of phalaenopsis itself is quite long, lasting from 2 months to 5 or 6 months. The first blooming usually occurs from April to June in spring, while the second blooming may happen from August to September in autumn. Therefore, even though it takes some time for the phalaenopsis to bloom after repotting, once it does, the viewing period will be quite considerable.
Maintenance methods of phalaenopsis after repotting
Watering: After repotting, the water for phalaenopsis needs to be controlled. Water it only when the sphagnum moss in the pot is relatively dry to avoid root rot caused by waterlogging. When it enters the full blooming period in spring, water it once every 2 to 3 days to keep the pot soil moist, and you can also spray more water to increase the air humidity. In summer, when the temperature is high, water it once a day and spray water on the leaves more often to cool them down. After the temperature drops in autumn, reduce the frequency of watering and avoid watering in the evening. In winter, move the potted plant back to a warm place indoors, control the room temperature at 12 to 15℃, and reduce the amount of watering.
Lighting: Phalaenopsis likes bright diffused light and should avoid direct sunlight. In summer, it needs to be shaded for maintenance to prevent the leaves from being burned. In spring and autumn, the lighting time can be appropriately increased to promote photosynthesis and nutrient accumulation.
Fertilization: Phalaenopsis does not need fertilization during the root recovery period after repotting. After new roots grow out, fertilization can be started to promote the growth of the plant. From June to September is the growth period of new roots and new leaves. Fertilize once a week, and water-soluble fertilizers can be used. During the high-temperature period in summer, fertilization can be appropriately stopped for 2 to 3 times. After October, the growth of the orchid plant slows down, and the frequency and amount of fertilization should be reduced to avoid excessive growth that may affect flower bud formation. Stop fertilizing when entering winter and the blooming period.
Pruning: After the flowers of phalaenopsis wither, pruning should be carried out in a timely manner to reduce nutrient consumption. There are two pruning methods: light pruning and heavy pruning. For light pruning, cut the flower stem at the 4th to 5th node from the base, leaving the bud points, which is beneficial for blooming again in the same year. For heavy pruning, cut about 1 centimeter above the first node counting from the bottom, which is beneficial for the plant to rest and recuperate, and it will bloom more vigorously in the next year. When pruning, disinfect the scissors with alcohol to prevent wound infection.
Repotting and root treatment: The best time for repotting phalaenopsis is late May. When repotting, carefully take the plant out of the pot, peel off the old medium, check and prune the shriveled, blackened, and rotten roots, leaving only the healthy aerial roots. When potting, replace the sphagnum moss and the flower pot, and keep the medium loose, well-drained, and breathable. After repotting, the phalaenopsis needs refined management to help it recover growth quickly.
The blooming time and maintenance methods of phalaenopsis after repotting need to take multiple factors into comprehensive consideration. Only by mastering the correct maintenance techniques can phalaenopsis thrive in the new growth environment.
