In winter, as the outdoor temperature gradually decreases, many families will turn on the heating to ensure that the indoor temperature remains as warm as spring. However, such an environment is a period that requires special attention for the flowers at home. The following are some tips on how to grow flowers and the precautions to be taken when there is heating indoors in winter.
Control the Temperature Well: The suitable growth temperature for most flowers is between 15°C and 25°C. Excessively high temperatures can cause the flowers to grow too fast, consume too much nutrients, and affect their flowering in the following spring; while too low temperatures may cause the flowers to enter a dormant state or even die. Therefore, when growing flowers in a heated room, special attention should be paid to placing the flowers in an area with relatively stable temperature, and avoid placing them near the air outlet of the heating equipment or directly exposed to heat to prevent local overheating from scalding the flowers.
Increase Air Humidity: The heating will make the indoor air dry, while most flowers prefer a humid environment. Therefore, measures need to be taken to increase the air humidity. You can use a humidifier and turn it on regularly every day to keep the indoor air humidity at about 50%-70%. You can also place a water basin next to the flower pot, or often spray water on the leaves of the flowers and the surrounding air. But be careful to avoid spraying water at noon when the sun is strong to prevent burning the leaves. It is generally better to choose to spray in the morning or evening.
Pay Attention to the Watering Frequency: Due to the dry air, the evaporation rate of soil moisture in the flower pot will accelerate, but do not blindly increase the number of watering. The watering frequency should be determined according to the type of flower, the size of the flower pot and the dryness and wetness of the soil. For example, for Epipremnum aureum, watering can be done when the soil surface in the heated room is dry to a depth of 2-3 centimeters. But for drought-tolerant flowers such as succulents, the watering interval should be appropriately lengthened, and water should be added a few days after the soil is completely dry.
Ensure Sufficient Light: In winter, the daylight time is relatively short, and the demand for light of flowers in the indoor heated environment is still important. The flowers should be placed in a place with sufficient indoor light, such as a south-facing balcony or windowsill, so that the flowers can fully receive sunlight. Rotate the flower pot about once a week to make the flowers receive light in all directions and avoid the plant growing to one side due to uneven light.
Open Windows for Ventilation Regularly: The heated room is often relatively closed, and good ventilation is crucial for the growth of flowers. On days with good weather and not particularly low temperatures, the windows can be opened appropriately for ventilation and air exchange every day. The ventilation time can be about 20-30 minutes each time to let fresh air into the room, exhaust the stale air, and reduce the probability of flowers being infected with diseases and pests. But be careful to place the flowers in a sheltered position to prevent cold air from directly blowing on the flowers and freezing them.
Fertilize in Moderation: The growth of flowers is relatively slow in winter, but some flowers in the heated room may still grow to a certain extent, so fertilization should be moderate. Try to choose fertilizers with mild fertilizer effects and easy absorption to prevent root burning. For the flowers that bloom in winter and spring, within the allowable temperature range, fertilization can be carried out appropriately, but phosphorus and potassium fertilizers should be the main fertilizers, and excessive application of nitrogen fertilizers should be avoided to prevent excessive growth of branches and leaves.
Growing flowers indoors with heating in winter requires comprehensive consideration of multiple factors such as temperature, humidity, light, ventilation and fertilization, and careful maintenance according to the characteristics of different flowers, so that the flowers can grow healthily and bloom beautifully in winter.
