Sedum spectabile, also known as Hualise Jingtian, Huoxue Sanqi, White Flower Scorpionweed, etc., is a perennial succulent herb of the Sedum genus in the Crassulaceae family. Its plant height is usually 30-50 cm, the stem height is 60-70 cm, and the underground rhizome part is plump. The above-ground stems are clustered, thick and upright. The leaves are whorled or opposite, with an inverted oval shape, succulent, with wavy teeth, 8-10 cm long and 2-2.3 cm wide.
The flowering period of Sedum spectabile is from August to September each year. The petals have 4-5 pieces, 5-6 mm long, wide-lanceolate, white or pink. The stamens are as long as or slightly shorter than the petals, and the anthers are purple. Its optimal growth temperature is 13-20 degrees, and the minimum cold tolerance temperature is minus 20 degrees. It likes to live in sunny conditions and a dry, well-ventilated environment. It has a slight shade tolerance and a strong vitality. It doesn't have high requirements for the soil and should not have water accumulation, otherwise, it will cause root rot of the plants and attract pests.
Sedum spectabile is mainly planted through two methods: ramet planting and cutting propagation. Ramet planting is generally carried out from mid-April to early August each year. When the local temperature is between 21 and 25 degrees, it is the most suitable for the survival of Sedum spectabile. If it is the rainy season, then choose to avoid planting during the rainy season. Before planting, just keep the land flat, remove bricks or stones on the ground as much as possible, and regularly clear the weeds. For cutting propagation, after the flowering period of Sedum spectabile, cut off the above-ground part, remove the basal leaves, then insert them into the soil, keep the soil moist, and roots can be formed in about a week.
The following are some maintenance methods and precautions for Sedum spectabile:
Maintenance methods
Watering:
Sedum spectabile requires sufficient water, but pay attention to the appropriate amount when watering to avoid root rot caused by excessive watering.
During the growing season (such as spring and summer), the amount of watering can be appropriately increased; while in autumn and winter, the amount of watering should be reduced to keep the soil dry.
When watering, follow the principle of "better dry than excessive", especially during the flowering period, adopt the watering method of "intermittent dry and intermittent wet".
Light:
Sedum spectabile requires sufficient sunlight and is best placed in a place with abundant sunlight.
During high temperatures in summer, appropriate shading is required to avoid damage to the plants from sun exposure.
When planted in northern areas, pay attention that the light time should not be less than 4 hours to ensure its normal growth.
Temperature:
Sedum spectabile is suitable for growing in a warm environment, and the growth temperature range is 15℃ to 25℃.
In winter, pay attention to keeping the temperature above 0℃ to avoid freeze damage to the plants. Sedum spectabile has a certain cold tolerance and can survive at a low temperature of about -20℃.
Fertilization:
During the growing season, Sedum spectabile requires appropriate fertilizers to promote its growth and flowering.
Generally, applying organic fertilizer or compound fertilizer once every 10 days or so is enough.
Before and after flowering, the frequency and amount of fertilization can be appropriately increased. But fertilization should be stopped during periods of high humidity such as the plum rain season to avoid root rot.

Precautions

Avoid excessive watering and fertilization: Excessive watering can lead to root rot, and excessive fertilization can cause damage to the plants. Therefore, the amount of watering and fertilization should be appropriately controlled.
Pay attention to pest and disease control: Sedum spectabile may be affected by pests such as aphids and red spiders, as well as diseases such as root rot. Regular inspections are required and appropriate control measures should be taken, such as using a combination of biological and chemical control methods, but pay attention to using appropriate pesticides and doses to avoid damage to the plants.

Regular pruning: To maintain the beauty and health of Sedum spectabile, regular pruning is necessary. When pruning, be careful not to cut the main branches and flowers. Only prune off the dead branches and overly long branches. Before winter, a comprehensive pruning can be carried out to remove the dead and diseased branches above the ground, which is conducive to the plants' better wintering.

Pay attention to the placement: Sedum spectabile can be placed outdoors or indoors, but be careful not to place it in the wind gap or a dark place. It is best to place it in a sunny and well-ventilated place to ensure its normal growth and flowering.
Through the above methods, Sedum spectabile can be effectively planted and maintained, and it can grow healthily and beautifully.
