The velvet plant is a plant that lives up to its name. After its petals bloom, they form a six-pointed star shape. The surface of its leaves is covered with a delicate velvet texture. Its leaves are usually dark green, and the backs of the leaves are bright red or purple, giving a noble, unique, and elegant impression.
The velvet plant symbolizes bringing good luck and represents a warm family atmosphere and elegant quality of life. The flowering period of fresh-cut velvet plants is generally about 20 days. When purchasing velvet plants at the flower market, try not to choose too immature ones, otherwise, it will be difficult for them to bloom. You can also check if the cut is fresh. Generally, bright green is the best. If your velvet plant refuses to bloom, you can take it with you when taking a bath and use steam to fumigate it. Then it can bloom. But be careful not to spray hot water on the flower heads. For normal fresh flowers, after bringing them back, unpack and cut the roots diagonally. Put them in a flower refreshing bucket filled with water for about 4 hours. After refreshing, take them out and put them in a vase. Add 1/2 to 2/3 of water and preservatives. Finally, cut the roots diagonally according to the height of the vase. Change the water every 2 to 3 days. Each time, clean the roots and the vase. If the roots are a little soft, you also need to cut them off. Avoid direct blowing of air conditioning and ensure good ventilation.
The velvet plant is a tropical plant native to South America and is also an ideal choice for indoor decoration. If you buy a potted velvet plant, in daily home maintenance, it likes a semi-shady environment. Therefore, try to avoid strong sunlight exposure, otherwise, it may cause the leaves to be burned and unable to bloom. It is recommended to place it next to the window but not directly exposed to sunlight.
Regarding temperature and humidity, the most suitable growth temperature for the velvet plant is 18 - 27°C. When it is cold in winter and the temperature is lower than 10°C, bring it back indoors. At the same time, maintaining a certain air humidity is also very important. You can spray mist around the plant regularly to increase humidity.
For daily watering, follow the principle of slightly moist soil. It is recommended to water once a week. The specific frequency depends on the season and environmental humidity. During hot summers, the watering frequency can be appropriately increased. As for fertilization, during its growth in spring and summer, apply a balanced fertilizer rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium once a month to help it grow healthily.
