As a commonly used propagation method for Phalaenopsis, division propagation can prolong the life of the plant. Below, I will introduce to you the methods and precautions for dividing Phalaenopsis.
Preparations before Division
1. Soak the roots in advance: Be sure to water the Phalaenopsis thoroughly before division. Considering that the cut surface needs to be kept dry after division, soak the plant one day in advance to allow the roots to absorb water fully. In this way, the roots will be more flexible during division, reducing the risk of being broken.
2. Sterilize and disinfect the tools: The flower shears and knives used must be strictly sterilized and disinfected to prevent bacteria from infecting the wounds of the Phalaenopsis. Choose to burn the surface of the tools with a lighter to achieve the effect of rapid sterilization. When operating, be particularly careful to avoid damaging the roots and leaves as much as possible.
Division and Subsequent Treatment
1. Treatment of the dry cut surface: Carefully take the Phalaenopsis out of the flower pot, gently shake off the substrate at the roots, and the movements must be gentle to prevent damage to the roots. Observe the plant carefully and select the lateral buds with aerial roots as the daughter plants. Use the sterilized flower shears or a small knife to separate the daughter plants from the mother plant, ensuring that the daughter plants have sufficient roots and leaves. After division, apply carbendazim powder to the wounds of both the mother plant and the daughter plants to prevent wound infection.
2. Plant maintenance: Replant the treated mother plant back into the flower pot and place it in a cool and ventilated place, avoiding direct strong light. Keep the substrate slightly moist, and carry out normal maintenance after the mother plant resumes growth. Place the daughter plants in a cool and ventilated place to air-dry for 1 - 2 days to promote wound healing. After that, plant it in a flower pot filled with new sphagnum moss. Water it moderately in the initial stage to keep the sphagnum moss moist, and place the daughter plants in a place with sufficient scattered light.
Precautions
Avoid damaging the roots and leaves during division, which is crucial for the survival rate of the plant. Phalaenopsis is sensitive to temperature and humidity. After division, the temperature of the maintenance environment should be controlled at 20 - 25°C, and the relative humidity should be maintained at 60% - 80%. As long as you strictly follow the division methods and steps and do a good job in subsequent maintenance, the Phalaenopsis can grow vigorously.
