Today, I'd like to share with you several kinds of edible herbs that are suitable for indoor planting.
Basil Leaves
Basil leaves are a widely popular edible herb. Their emerald-green leaves are oval in shape and emit a unique fragrance, which seems to be a blend of the aromas of cloves and mint. In cooking, basil leaves have a wide range of applications. They are especially suitable to be paired with tomatoes. Whether it's for making Italian pasta sauce or pizza toppings, they can add rich flavors to the dishes. It prefers a warm and humid environment, and sufficient sunlight can promote its lush growth. When planting basil leaves, well-drained soil should be chosen to prevent waterlogging from damaging the roots.
Mint
Mint is famous for its cool taste and unique smell. Its leaves are oval in shape with serrated edges, and a strong cool fragrance will be released when you gently rub them. Mint can be used for making tea, preparing desserts like mint chocolate, or as a decoration for dishes. Mint has a vigorous vitality and strong adaptability to the environment. It is both cold-resistant and heat-resistant. However, mint grows rapidly and needs to be pruned regularly to avoid excessive spreading. It is suitable for growing in an environment with half shade and half sunlight, and you just need to keep the soil moist.
Rosemary
Rosemary has slender, needle-like leaves that are dark green and covered with a thin layer of wax on the surface, making them look shiny. It emits a strong aroma of pine wood and is an important spice in Western cuisine cooking. Rosemary is often used to season meat dishes such as grilled lamb chops and roasted chicken, which can remove the fishy smell and enhance the fragrance. Rosemary is highly drought-tolerant and likes plenty of sunlight and well-drained sandy soil. Although it grows relatively slowly, it has a long lifespan. As long as it is properly cared for, it can become a long-term potted plant companion.
Perilla Leaves
The two sides of perilla leaves have different colors. The front side is green or purple, and the back side is purplish-red. The leaves are oval or round in shape and emit a unique fragrance. Perilla is widely used in cooking in East Asia. It can be used to make dishes like perilla leaf-wrapped rice and stir-fried snails with perilla, and it can also be used medicinally. Perilla has a strong adaptability and is not very demanding on the soil. It likes sunlight but can also tolerate shade. However, it grows more vigorously in a sunny environment.
