Phalaenopsis orchids, an elegant and charming orchid variety, are deeply loved by flower enthusiasts for their unique growth habits and beautiful flowers. During the process of cultivating phalaenopsis orchids, there is often a question: Should the roots of phalaenopsis orchids be exposed? Do we need to bury the roots?
First of all, we need to understand the characteristics of the root system of phalaenopsis orchids. Phalaenopsis orchids are epiphytic orchids, and most of their roots are aerial roots. These aerial roots not only have the function of absorbing water and nutrients from the air but can also carry out photosynthesis. This characteristic makes the root system of phalaenopsis orchids different from that of many plants in the traditional sense. The roots of traditional plants usually penetrate deeply into the soil and absorb water and nutrients from the soil, while the roots of phalaenopsis orchids rely more on the air and the attachment to obtain the required nutrients and water.
Benefits of Exposing the Roots: Exposing part or all of the roots of phalaenopsis orchids to the air is actually beneficial to their growth. The exposed roots can carry out photosynthesis better, promoting the development of the roots and the absorption of nutrients. At the same time, the exposed roots make it easier to observe their health status, which is convenient for timely detection and handling of root problems, such as rot, diseases, and pests.
Disadvantages of Burying the Roots: In contrast, burying all the roots of phalaenopsis orchids may have an adverse impact on their growth. Since the roots of phalaenopsis orchids need sufficient air circulation for respiration and photosynthesis, if all the roots are buried in the soil, it may lead to oxygen deficiency and rot of the roots. In addition, the microorganisms and pathogens in the soil may also damage the roots of phalaenopsis orchids, further affecting their healthy growth.
In order to enable the roots of phalaenopsis orchids to grow healthily, we need to provide them with a suitable environment. This includes appropriate temperature, humidity, and light conditions. Phalaenopsis orchids prefer a warm and humid environment, and the suitable growth temperature is 18-28°C. Too high or too low a temperature will affect their growth. At the same time, high humidity is also the key to the healthy growth of phalaenopsis orchids. We can increase the air humidity by spraying water, using a humidifier, or placing a water tray. In terms of light, phalaenopsis orchids like a semi-shaded environment and should avoid long-term direct sunlight to prevent the leaves from being burned.
When cultivating phalaenopsis orchids, we also need to select suitable substrates to fix their roots. Commonly used substrates include sphagnum moss, bark, perlite, etc. These substrates all have good air permeability and water retention, which can meet the growth needs of the roots of phalaenopsis orchids. When using these substrates, we need to pay attention not to wrap them too tightly to avoid affecting the respiration and photosynthesis of the roots.
It is beneficial for the growth of phalaenopsis orchids to expose part or all of their roots to the air. We do not need to bury all the roots but should provide them with a suitable growth environment and appropriate cultivation substrates. Only in this way can phalaenopsis orchids bloom under our careful care.
