Phalaenopsis has beautiful flower postures and is colorful. You can use the flower stalk to induce buds for propagation at home, easily turning one pot into multiple pots! Now, I will share the specific method with you.
Treatment of the Flower Stalk
First, find a healthy and vigorous Phalaenopsis. The bud points on the flower stalk should be plump and not yet germinated. After finding a suitable flower stalk, take a sharp pair of scissors and disinfect them with alcohol in advance. Counting from the base of the flower stalk upwards, cut the flower stalk obliquely at the second to third node. Cutting it obliquely can make the incision area larger, facilitating the absorption of nutrients.
Applying the Bud Inducing Agent
The bud inducing agent can stimulate the bud points to germinate. Apply the bud inducing agent evenly on the bud points, and be gentle in your movements to ensure that each bud point is covered. Most of the bud inducing agents on the market are cytokinin-based. Dilute them according to the instructions before use for better results.
Suitable Environment
After applying the bud inducing agent, place the Phalaenopsis in a warm, well-ventilated place with bright but indirect light. Keep the temperature at 25 to 28°C, as the bud points grow fastest at this temperature. Never expose it to strong sunlight, otherwise the bud points and the plant are likely to be sunburned, affecting the bud induction.
Daily Maintenance
1. Don't water too much: When inducing buds, just keep the substrate slightly moist. Phalaenopsis generally uses sphagnum moss as the substrate. When the surface of the sphagnum moss turns white, spray some water with a spray bottle. Stop spraying once the sphagnum moss is moist, as water accumulation is likely to cause root rot.
2. Apply thin fertilizers frequently: Apply a thin liquid fertilizer to the Phalaenopsis once every 10 to 15 days. The best ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium is 1:1:1. When fertilizing, pour the fertilizer slowly along the edge of the flower pot, and don't let the fertilizer touch the bud points, otherwise the bud points will be burned.
Transplanting of Seedlings
With careful care for 2 to 3 months, the bud points will grow into new seedlings. When the seedlings have grown 3 to 4 leaves and the roots are 2 to 3 centimeters long, they can be transplanted. Carefully separate the seedlings from the flower stalk and plant them in a new flower pot. Choose a new flower pot with good air permeability, and still use sphagnum moss as the substrate. After planting, place the seedlings in a cool and well-ventilated place to let them recover for a week, and then they can be maintained as normal.
In short, as long as you remember these steps and take good care of them, you can turn one pot of Phalaenopsis into multiple pots.
