Dan Viet News Network of Vietnam reported that currently, Vietnam ranks first in durian exports to China, surpassing Thailand, thanks to various favorable factors, and its market share has increased to 57%.
Chinese customs data shows that in the first two months of this year, a total of 53.11 tons of fresh durians were imported into China, with the value increasing by 283.6 million US dollars (the same below, about 1.349 billion ringgit), with a 0.4% increase in quantity, but a 0.9% decrease in value compared with the same period last year.
Vietnam has exceeded Thailand with 32.75 tons of durian export volume, becoming the largest country to export durians to China, with a value of 161 million US dollars. Compared with the same period in 2023, the quantity and value have increased by 2.4 times, and the market share of Vietnamese durians in China has increased from 32% in 2023 to 57% this year.
Chinese customs data shows that Thailand is the second largest durian exporting country after Vietnam, with an export volume of 19.016 tons and a value of 120.3 million US dollars. Compared with the same period, the quantity has decreased by 50.3%, and the value has decreased by 45.2%. In addition to Thailand and Vietnam, China also imports durians from the Philippines, but the market share is quite small, accounting for only about 2% (about 1 million US dollars).
In the first two months of this year, the average export price of Vietnamese durians to China was 4,916 US dollars per ton, which was lower than the 6,133 US dollars per ton of Thai durians, but higher than the 3,075 US dollars per ton of Philippine durians. In the first two months of this year, the average price of Vietnamese durians exported to China was lower than that of Thai durians, but higher than that of Philippine durians.
It is reported that an important advantage of Vietnamese durians is that the country has abundant durian production and can be harvested throughout the year, especially in the seasons without Thai durians, which makes Vietnamese durians have no competitors.
In addition, another advantage is the close proximity to the market, and Vietnamese durians can be quickly transported to China, as well as being competitively priced. These advantages are the factors that allow Vietnamese durians to make considerable progress in the Chinese market in less than two years.
The Department of International Trade Promotion of the Thai Ministry of Commerce released information in December last year, stating that since September last year, the export volume of fresh Vietnamese durians to the Chinese market has exceeded that of Thai fresh durians, so Vietnamese durians have become the main force in the current Chinese market.
In October last year, the import volume of fresh durians from China was 120,000 tons, which was an increase from 100,000 tons in the previous year. Among them, China imported more fresh durians from Vietnam, while the import of durians from Thailand continued to decline at the same time.
