Since ancient times, Leonurus japonicus has been regarded as a guardian of women's health. It is an annual or biennial herb of the genus Leonurus in the Lamiaceae family, and some people also call it Yizi. In the Ming Dynasty, Li Shizhen called it "Yimu Yiming". In the medical field, after drying its leaves and flowers, they can be boiled in water or combined with eggs in dietary therapy to treat gynecological problems such as amenorrhea and dysmenorrhea. However, it should be noted that Leonurus japonicus is cold in nature, so pregnant women and those with a deficiency-cold constitution should use it with caution.
Leonurus japonicus is native to various regions in China. In the natural environment, it mostly grows in sunny areas at an altitude of up to 3,400 meters. It can be planted in spring, summer and autumn. It can be planted and maintained in places with good light such as courtyards and balconies, and is suitable for beginners to cultivate because of its strong adaptability. It naturally likes a warm and humid environment, and prefers sunny conditions but can also tolerate partial shade.
In terms of soil, Leonurus japonicus has low requirements. As long as it is loose, well-drained sandy soil, it will do. If possible, an appropriate amount of decomposed organic fertilizer can be added to the soil before planting, which can improve soil fertility. In terms of water control, the principle of watering Leonurus japonicus is to keep the soil slightly moist. Note that overwatering should be avoided, otherwise the roots are prone to rot. In summer, the plant and its surrounding environment can be sprayed regularly to increase air humidity.
In terms of fertilization, Leonurus japonicus does not need to be fertilized frequently. During the growing season, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are mainly used. In order to promote flowering and make the fruits more brightly colored, potassium dihydrogen phosphate can also be used. Fertilization can be stopped in winter. Pruning is also an indispensable part of plant maintenance. Regular pruning of withered leaves and branches can not only maintain its good shape, but also promote the growth of new buds, making the plant more compact and healthy.
In addition, attention should also be paid to the prevention and control of diseases and pests in the daily care of Leonurus japonicus, such as aphids, spider mites, and there may also be some nuisances during the rainy season. So what are the treatment methods for pest control? If there are only a few small insect eggs, it is only necessary to prune them off and throw them away, and then spray some sterilizing solution.
If they have already become small insects but the quantity is not large, some pepper water, edible vinegar or garlic can be sprayed to get rid of the insects. However, if there are a large number of insects, then insecticides such as imidacloprid or omethoate (generally sprayed once every 7 to 10 days) should be sprayed. Spraying 2 to 3 times in a row can basically eliminate the pests.
