I believe that many flower enthusiasts have bought moth orchids during the Chinese New Year's Eve period. Besides having good symbolic meanings, it is also known as the "Queen of Orchids" among the people because its flower shape after blooming resembles a dancing butterfly.
However, although its flower posture is charming, the process of cultivating it has caused headaches for many people. Among them, the most easily overlooked part is the cultivation "soil". If the cultivation is not done properly, moss may even grow on the roots. For orchids, problems like this are all unfavorable, and if not dealt with later, the plant may gradually wither.
Under normal circumstances, there are two reasons for the appearance of moss in the "soil" during the cultivation of moth orchids. Firstly, it is caused by excessive watering or not replacing the "soil" for a long time, which affects the medium. Secondly, it may be that the roots of the plant already had a corruption problem when it was purchased, and the degree of rot exceeds half. These situations will not only promote the growth of moss but also pose a serious threat to the health of the moth orchid and affect its normal growth.
So, in daily cultivation, how can we determine whether the "soil" is healthy? In fact, observing the state of the soil of the moth orchid is not complicated. You can take photos at the beginning of the purchase and then compare them at any time later. In daily cultivation, it is also necessary to ensure that the soil has good air permeability and drainage.
If a large amount of moss is found in the pot during the cultivation process, you can gently dig up the soil to find the roots that have already rotted, and then decisively cut off the problematic parts. For small areas of rot, you can bury them back and continue to observe. If the area is large, you need to replace the soil with new soil. Orchids usually use sphagnum moss and tree bark, which have very high air permeability and drainage, and are beneficial to the health of the plants.
At the same time, when buying moth orchids, in addition to checking whether the flowers and flower spikes are intact, you must also carefully examine the health of the roots. Because if you choose a moth orchid with severely damaged roots, no matter how carefully you cultivate it later, it will not be able to bloom.
If you find signs of moss growing in the soil after cultivating the moth orchid for a period of time, you should quickly replace the soil with new soil, and at the same time adjust the watering frequency. Don't water too much, otherwise the roots are likely to rot.
